Exploring Photography Locations in Seattle: The local nursery

With summer approaching, I’m getting back into Wedding photography and portraiture. I love using natural light and being in the outdoors. Seattle is full of lovely spots lush with greenery.

My two kids will exploring the city with me this summer. We’ll focus mostly on parks and  outside locations. But, I’m also looking for non-traditional spots too. We found our first in White Center – just on the cusp of West Seattle: Village Green Perennial Nursery. I visited for the first time a few weeks ago to buy some things for the garden, and knew I had to return with my camera.

The owner is hoping to share her lush garden for weddings, and I think the setting is perfect for those who want and outdoor woodsy wedding without leaving the city.

My children love to dress up, and so for this exploration they were Dinosaur and Fairy Princess. As you can see, they fit right in and would have stayed for the whole day if I let them.

I would love to use this space again for Engagement Portraits or Family Sessions.

Where should I explore next?

My creative teacher is my Mother

My Mommy was my first creative teacher. The first time I remember her creating something was when I was about 4 years old. She painted on large canvas in her bedroom. My brother and I stood at eye level with the canvas on the table, and she let us each pick out a color of paint. Then, she used those colors and one or two of her choosing and made a mesmerizing scene. I thought it was like magic to do that sort of thing. Just watching those brush strokes and colors merge was enchanting.

Two years later and 4 years after I stole her camera for my first shot, she encouraged my interest in Photography by posing for me on purpose. You see, I wanted to take photos of her, and would try to do so in the moment without posing. What I was able to capture was fun! This photo won me my first award.

Portrait of my Mom, captured at age 6.

As I grew older, my Mother encouraged me to try any creative endeavor I wanted. I painted, created some metal work, enjoyed painting a small mural and began writing. When I rediscovered my love of photography, she was my first fan. My first SLR camera was her father’s. He died when I was 13, and I finally dusted off his prized Contax camera with Carl Ziess Lenses four years later. My first photos were of people.

Capturing life in moments of joy and the mundane make me feel delighted. I love people. I think what I really love is capturing the beauty in life, and so my work has expanded to art photography in nature and my surroundings.

And, I have my Mom to thank for this sense of wonder and exploration with my photography. I am forever grateful for her patience and example.

What has your Mother taught you? Don’t forget to thank her!

April was a busy, full, fun month for me. I am just now getting caught up on photos with two projects and a trip added to a normal month of capturing beautiful images.

I love capturing beauty in nature; especially in flowers, but sometimes I find myself capturing other things. People are another love of  mine. You’ll see below;)

So without further ado, here are my personal favorite 6 from April:

Blossoms and bands: inspiration

When I was under 3 years old, I would dance to the jingles during commercials on TV. I have always loved music. From classical to big band, I would let myself dance until I reached that awkward age where I started to care about what people thought of me.

I met my husband at the Crocodile, a local Seattle music venue. It was a fun night where my old High School buddy introduced me to a new group of friends. My husband was one of them. Eventually, we both decided to go see a Snow Patrol show together. It’s one of the many things we love to do. And now that we’re parents going out to one is a rare treat.

There’s something about live music that is so beautiful. As I’m enjoying a show, capturing images is just as natural to me as photographing blossoms.

Flowers have always caught my attention. Like watching a live band play, they make me happy. And, so with both on my mind this past month, I’ve accidentally gathered a short collection of photographs, quite accidentally with the same hues: And so, I give you  bands and blossoms.

p.s. I’ve found a great deal of creative inspiration by Chase Jarvis LIVE – interviewing creatives from photographers to bands to actors. The interview with We Are Augustines was especially full of inspiring quotes. I was in the kitchen making food while I listened, as you can see:)

Tulips in the sunlight

Confession: when I’m having a bad day, I pick up my camera and focus on something lovely, or funny, or enchanting.  Like flowers, for example. I can’t stop taking photographs of them. These light purple Tulips were captured when I was having a bad day. They didn’t make everything become good, but did shift my mind into a better mood, so that I was able to handle the challenge of the day.

What creative things help you get into a better mood?

Want to get some of the sunshine in your home? Check out what’s up in the Holliwithani Etsy Shop.

Check out my new shop!

Framed Fern for sell in my Etsy shop!

After doing a lot of research, I finally decided to open an Etsy shop for holliwithani. There are several promising services out there that would plug into this blog, and do all the work for me: printing, shipping, etc. However, my name isn’t out there enough to justify such a service.

Etsy provides the possibility of millions in terms of exposure. They also charge only $0.20 per item listed. And, for now, I like the idea of seeing my work packaged nicely before sending it off. I’m a sucker for personal notes of thanks too.

Without further ado, please let me introduce you to my shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/holliwithani

For anyone interested in selling on Etsy.com, or who already are, but want to learn more…

School House Craft is an organization dedicated to helping crafters! They are hosting a Fall Conference September 21-23rd in Seattle with classes like Bookpublishing, Bookeeping and having your shop reviewed by an Etsy Team!

This upcoming conference might have been the clincher for me, honestly. I have another Etsy shop for my crafty side, but it hasn’t really gotten much effort from me. And, I don’t want my new shop to fall into the same lame shape. I’d like to see both of them flourish! I would LOVE to have my crafts and photographs not only fund my creative endeavors, but also help support our family.

Thank you for taking a look at the shop. I’ll be adding more weekly!
